Toronto, Ontario – The Armenian National Committee of Toronto announced their endorsements of Bob Rae and Martha Hall Findlay for the federal by-elections, which will be held on Monday, March 17, 2008.
The Honourable Bob Rae is the Liberal candidate for the riding of Toronto Centre and currently the Liberal Party’s Foreign Affairs Critic. Bob finished in third place at the Liberal Party’s leadership convention in December 2006. Mr. Rae was Premier of Ontario from 1990 to 1995.
Bob has been a long-time friend of the Armenian community, having issued proclamations on the Armenian Genocide while Premier of Ontario. More recently, Bob was present at the ANCT’s annual commemoration of the Armenian Genocide in April 2007, as well as the Armenian Community Centre’s Summerfest in July 2007. ANCT members were present at his campaign office opening in October 2007, and fundraiser in November 2007.
Martha Hall Findlay is the Liberal candidate for the riding of Willowdale and was the first declared candidate for the Liberal Party leadership for the December 2006 convention. She was also the federal Liberal candidate in Newmarket-Aurora in 2004. She is running to replace the retired Jim Peterson in the riding, who himself was a long-time friend of the Toronto-Armenian community.
ANCT representatives have had numerous discussions with Martha, including a meeting on December 17, 2007, where she was given a tour of the Armenian Community Centre. Martha has expressed an overall positive sentiment towards the key issues for the Toronto Armenian community, and we look forward to her election to the House of Commons and working with her in the future.
