Toronto, Ontario - The Armenian National Committee of Toronto thanked the Foreign Affairs Committee of the United States House of Representatives for adopting a resolution on October 10, 2007 officially recognizing the Armenian Genocide. This resolution will now move toward passage by the full House of Representatives.
Once the resolution passes, the United States will join Canada in recognizing the historical reality of the Armenian Genocide. On April 19, 2006, Prime Minister Stephen Harper officially recognized the Armenian Genocide, following the passage of resolutions in both the House of Commons (April 21, 2004) and Senate (June 13, 2002).
“We are very pleased that the United States has finally taken positive steps to join Canada in recognizing that the events of 1915 were a genocide against the Armenian population of the Ottoman Empire” said Armenian National Committee of Toronto chairman Vahan Ajamian, “and we would like to thank all the Representatives that stood up to Turkish strong arm tactics to ensure that justice and truth prevailed.”
